The Oasis of En Gedi
by Daniel & Michelle Ramsey
In this Israel Video blog, we will travel to the Oasis of En Gedi, located on the western shore of the Dead Sea. The name En Gedi means “The spring of the kid (goat).” The fresh water springs provide a lush environment in the midst of the stark desert terrain. Several beautiful waterfalls in the area provide a great sense of refreshment and peacefulness.
The thriving community of Kibbutz of En Gedi is located in this area. The area is also home to a great diversity of desert wildlife, including Nubian Ibex, Syrian Hyrax, numerous species of birds and more. We always enjoy watching the herds of Ibex masterfully traverse the rocky cliffs. They are master climbers indeed! Perhaps the cutest of the inhabitants at En Gedi are the Syrian hyrax, more commonly known as Coneys or Rock Badgers. These furry little mammals can be found under rock outcroppings, feeding in the trees or sun bathing. The writer of Proverbs 30:26 said, “. . .hyraxes are creatures of little power, yet they make their home in the rocky crags. . .” They always put a smile on our faces!
The Oasis of En Gedi has been inhabited from ancient times. A modest hike takes you through some rugged terrain to the remains of a temple dated to around 4000 – 3150 B.C. Perhaps the most well known biblical event that took place here is recorded in I Samuel 23:29ff. It was in the caves here that David hid out in from King Saul. You can still see many of these ancient caves throughout the area. There is also a 5thcentury A.D. synagogue here. It is open to visitors and definitely not to be missed. Its mosaic floors are something to behold!
